A Message from Civil Service Commission
Chairperson Susan Grimes Munsell

Dear Classified Employees,

Welcome to the first edition of the 2004 MI (pronounced "MY") Civil Service News!

As you may already know, at the April meeting of the Civil Service Commission ("CSC"), the CSC took action to amend its rules by adding Rule 1-4.2, Communication with Employees. This rule requires that the State Personnel Director periodically communicate with classified employees to share matters of interest. The objective of this new rule is to circulate information regarding new rules, amendments to the rules, regulations, policy changes, and other matters of interest. The State Personnel Director may also communicate information on other topics of interest coming from the Office of the State Employer or the Office of Retirement Services.

This first News issue will highlight four areas. They are (1) MI HR - targeted to be in operation in August 2004, (2) Long-term Care Insurance Open Enrollment - another opportunity for employees to take advantage without a medical examination, (3) Voluntary Work Schedule Adjustment Program ("VWSAP") - the summer is here and maybe VWSAP is an option to give you more leisure time during the summer months, and (4) Political Activities - if you are thinking about engaging in political activities - read this article first. We have also provided an "I Want to Know. . ." section to provide answers to questions you might have.

We hope you will find MI Civil Service News to be informative and useful. We would appreciate and look forward to your comments or suggestions for topics or improvements to consider making MI Civil Service News even better. Please direct your comments or suggestions to MDCS-CivilServiceNews@michigan.gov or Michigan Department of Civil Service, MI CS News, 400 South Pine Street, Lansing, Michigan 48909.

Best regards,

Susan Grimes-Munsell, Chairperson
Michigan Civil Service Commission
